Approach
Determine the efficacy of Altosid® IGR in cattle mineral at 0.01% (S)-Methoprene for the control of horn flies (Haematobia irritans) on cow-calf pairs.
Key Findings
Horn Flies:
Peak horn fly numbers from mid-July to early September
Mineral Consumption:
Mineral consumption was variable over time
Altosid® IGR control:
Treated group had a lower number of horn flies than control group
Treated group exceeded the economic threshold for horn flies six times
Average number of horn flies per side of animal calculated from weekly pictures of treated and control herds. Economic threshold shown as 100 horn flies per side of animal for beef cattle production.
