Project Details
Project Lead: Kim Wolfe, Research & Development Specialist – Ag Resources, Manitoba Agriculture
Collaborators: Syngenta Canada
Years: 2017
Project Status: Complete
Funding & In-Kind Support: Syngenta Canada, Growing Forward II
Location: Brookdale Farm
Scope: Case Study
Keywords: Habitat Biodiversity
Approach
Establish pollinator habitat at Brookdale Farm using two different pollinator seed mixes (Syngenta’s Operation Pollinator mix and a native plant mix).
Key Findings
Pollinator habitat can be established using seed blends of different mixes.
Native seed mixes may have a higher diversity of flower types and colours which should attract and provide food for many species of pollinators. However, it may take years to establish.
The Operation Pollinator mix has fewer floral resources but was easy to establish and grew within a couple of weeks.
Choose a pollinator mix based on the amount of time and effort you are willing to expend on establishment.
